Infographic: by Karl Tate for Space.com From so-called Super Earths to hot Jupiters, the Kepler mission has been bringing us a rich and steady supply of wild exoplanet discoveries. The above infographic explains why.
DeepSpaceNews — How and why is Kepler responsible for all this exoplanet bounty? Check out the informative infographic, above. Created by Space.com infographic artist Karl Tate back in 2014, it remains a must-see for anyone trying to get up to speed on the exoplanet explosion.
NASA’s Kepler has scored thousands of exoplanet discoveries since its 2009 launch. But it may soon be getting some competition from the latest round of ground-based spectrometer tech, which is finally precise enough to detect Earth-sized exoplanets.
Like previous generations, these new spectrometers identify by exoplanets by finding nearby stars that ‘wobble” as a result of their orbits.
Watch this space for more on that technology.
